Myanmar earthquake response: One year on

Myanmar Recovery

One year ago, the hills of Myanmar were shaken by a devastating earthquake that demolished infrastructure and left thousands of families without shelter. The disaster struck a region already grappling with complex socio-political challenges, making the humanitarian response uniquely difficult and urgent.

Today, as we mark the anniversary of that tragic day, Golden Heart is committed to reflecting on the progress made and the work that remains. In the immediate aftermath, our emergency response focused on life-saving aid—food, clean water, and surgical supplies. But as the dust settled, our mission shifted toward long-term recovery and community resilience.

One-Year Progress Summary

We have successfully rebuilt 14 primary schools and supported the construction of 420 earthquake-resistant permanent homes for the most vulnerable families.

Wait, the reconstruction of a home is more than just laying bricks. It's about restoring a sense of safety and dignity to those who have lost everything. Each home we supported was built using local labor and materials, injecting much-needed resources back into the local economy while ensuring that the structures themselves were designed to withstand future seismic events.

Despite these successes, the road to full recovery remains long. Ongoing regional tensions continue to impact the movement of humanitarian goods, and many remote communities are still waiting for their infrastructure to be fully restored. "The cameras may have left, but the needs have not," says Min Zaw, a local community leader who oversaw the rebuilding of his village school. "For us, the earthquake is not a memory; it is a reality we face every day."

Golden Heart’s presence in Myanmar is not just about the buildings; it's about the people. We continue to provide psychosocial support for children who were traumatized by the disaster, ensuring that the mental health of a generation is not overlooked in our drive to rebuild physical infrastructure.

As we enter the second year of our recovery program, we are focusing on agricultural restoration and helping farmers get back to their fields. Your continued support ensures that Myanmar can move from survival to sustainable progress. Together, we are building a future that is stronger than the tremors of the past.
